Depuis 175 ans, la Fondation Asile des aveugles traite, diagnostique et suit les personnes ayant un problème visuel, du jeune enfant au plus âgé. Un hôpital universitaire, un EMS, une école pour malvoyants et un service de basse vision collaborent au sein de la Fondation pour venir en aide à toute personne déficiente visuelle. Le département Réadaptation et basse vision est un centre cantonal de réadaptation, dont l’objectif est d’augmenter l’autonomie et la qualité de vie des personnes déficientes visuelles. Ergothérapeutes, travailleurs sociaux, orthoptistes, optométristes, encadrés par un ophtalmologiste, apportent chaque année leur aide à un millier de personnes déficientes visuelles. Ces professionnels ont développé une expertise dans leur domaine au fil des ans. Ils ont collaboré avec d’autres associations, industriels et services publics pour créer des connaissances et de nouvelles possibilités pour les malvoyants.
En collaboration avec les experts en basse vision, le centre de recherche basse vision et ses plateformes dédiées (Living lab et Clinical Investigation Center) s’articulent autour de trois axes principaux :
Le premier concerne les technologies d’assistance aux personnes déficientes visuelles et notamment le développement d’aides utilisant l’intelligence artificielle. Pour y parvenir, nous travaillons en étroite collaboration avec des patients, des ingénieurs et des experts.
Le deuxième axe porte sur le développement des services de réadaptation en utilisant l’innovation pour quantifier et optimiser l’évaluation et la réadaptation afin d’offrir les services les plus adaptés à chaque patient.
Enfin, le dernier axe porte sur l’analyse des données en basse vision et le « Machine Learning ». Ces données peuvent être utiles pour mieux anticiper les besoins d’un patient. Elles sont également utilisées pour proposer un accompagnement optimal sans attendre qu’un problème ne survienne.

One university hospital, a retirement home, one school for the visually impaired, and a low vision
department collaborate within the Foundation to help every person with a visual impairment.
The Rehabilitation and Low Vision department is a cantonal end-user rehabilitation center, whose goal is to increase autonomy and quality of life of visually impaired people. Occupational therapists, social workers, orthoptists, optometrists, supervised by an ophthalmologist give their assistance to around thousand visually impaired people every year. These professionals developed an expertise in their domain along the years and collaborated with other associations, industrials and public services to create knowledge and new possibilities for the visually impaired.
In collaboration with low vision experts, the low vision research center and its dedicated platforms (Living lab and Clinical Investigation Center) focuses on three main axes :
The first concerns assistive technologies for people with visual impairments and especially developing aids that use artificial intelligence.To achieve this, we work closely with patients, engineers and experts.
The second axis focus on the development of the rehabilitation services using innovation to quantify and optimize evaluation and rehabilitation in order to offer the most suitable services for each patient.
Finally, the last axis focuses on the low vision data analysis and machine learning.
This data can be useful to better anticipate needs and offer optimal support without waiting for a problem to occur.
